Purpose: Medical error that threatens patient safety is an important issue to be solved for improving the quality of medical services, and it leads to economic loss, including physical and mental damages to heath care consumers who want to solve health problems safely. In this regard, this study aims to investigate the actual status of patient safety whose importance has been emphasized at home and abroad, and an analysis was conducted through a questionnaire survey of dentists from dental healthcare institutions.

Research methods: Questionnaires were written out with focus on identifying actual status of Medical errors. Based on the initially composed questions, an expert consultation was carried out, and the category of Medical accidents (Medical errors) was divided into medical conduct-related items (36 items), medical practitioners and auxiliary personnel-related items (12 items), patient-related items (15 items) and administrative accidents-related items (3 items). Among members of the Korean Dental Association in 2011, 199 dentists were extracted by means of stratified sampling method as the subjects of analysis.

Research results: The average number of years when medical accidents and disputes occurred after opening a dental clinic was 6.87 for medical accidents and 7.35 for medical disputes. That of dentists who experienced medical accidents within 5 years after opening a dental clinic was 47 (28.29%), and that of those who experienced medical disputes in less than 6-10 years was 38 (30.59%). In addition, 123 (74.1%) dentists were found to have experiences of 1 to 5 medical accidents, and 103 (83.0%) dentists experiences of 1 to 5 medical disputes. A look at the distribution of all types of items related to medical accidents according to the details of medical treatment revealed that the number of orthodontics-related accidents was highest with 243 (19.44%), and the number of dentists-related accidents was 133(10.64%), which is highest among the percentage of persons who conduct medical practices. The comparison results of the occurrence of medical accidents and disputes according to the general characteristics of dentists found that the age and the total number of years after opening a clinic showed a statistically significant difference in the item of medical accidents, and medical disputes did not show a statistical significance in any items.

Conclusion: It is thought that to promote a culture of patient safety, there is a need to form basic data supported by a survey conducted in Korea based on the existing studies abroad. As a research on the starting line from the perspective of patient safety, this study sought to identify actual status of patient safety. Based on the findings of this study, interests in patient safety from dental industry will be increased, and furthermore follow-up study needs to be conducted with various subjects such as medical staff and patient group as the primary target.
